​​Somatization is the expression of distress through physical symptoms and results from the mind-body or brain-body connection. Find out how it affects your child's health.

  • Everyone experiences somatization. When somatization causes distress, impairs a person's quality of life and becomes a focus of medical attention, it is diagnosed as a so matic symptom and related disorder (e.g., somatic symptom disorder [SSD], functional neurological disorder [FND]).
  • Children with a somatic symptom and related disorder (SSRD) may have medical conditions and other mental health conditions.
  • Depending on your child's symptoms, they may be assessed by a range of health-care professionals.
